球员抑郁和焦虑

But we start with the news that the World Players' Union FIFPro has announced plans are to begin combating depression and anxiety within the sport. They've released research showing that 38% of players have felt effects of the illnesses. The former Inter Milan youngster Martin Bengtsson is one such player. He tried to commit suicide while suffering from depression. And after reading the report, Bengtsson says he is not surprised by the link between injury and mental health issues.

I had an injury five or six months before my suicide attempt. I think that depression somehow increased during this period because to me it was the first time that I couldn't play football. And if you play football every day and that's all you do, when you can't do it, then you lose your worth, your self-confidence. You value yourself only through the results you do on the football pitch. When you can't perform, or when you can't do results, you've become nothing, you are nothing and that will do something to the human being.

Vincent Gouttebarge is FIFPro's chief medical officer. He is now looking to join with other sports to tackle the issue.
