(2024·济南市教学质量调研考试)Raised by a single mother in Hartford, Fred Wright struggled with behavioral problems and was forced to move from one school to another. He even reached a point where he felt like he had nothing to live for.

“I was walking around with a lot on my shoulders,” he said.“I couldnt handle it. I didn’t care about life anymore.” But all that started to change when Wright met Patricia Kelly.

“I was seven when I met Mrs Kelly.I wasn’t used to strictness. I wasn’t used to hearing the word ’no’,”said Wright, now 17.

Kelly, a former soldier and an equestrian (骑手), took Wright under her wing and helped him find hope in an unlikely place — on a horse.

“Wright was like a round peg that everybody kept trying to squeeze into a square hole,” Kelly said.“He was hurting. He needed a place where he could express himself. The riding field became that place for him.”

For the last 30 years, Kelly has helped children stay on the right track through her nonprofit, Ebony Horsewomen. The program offers horseback riding lessons and teaches animal science to more than 300 young

people a year. By exposing those children to horsemanship, Kelly aims to give them an alternative to the streets and an opportunity to turn their lives around.

“We use horses as a hook to create pride, esteem and healing,” said Kelly, 66.“They learn that they have ability. They just have to unlock it.”

“When you teach a child to ride a horse, they learn they are the center of their environment,” said Kelly.“Once they make that connection, they can change what happens in school, at home and in the community.”

(2024·福州市第十三中学高三期中)People use their mouths for many things. They eat, talk, shout and sing. They smile and they kiss. In the English language, there are many expressions using the word “mouth”.

For example, if you say bad things about a person, the person might protest and say: “Do not bad mouth me.” Sometimes, people say something to a friend or family member that they later regret because it hurts that person?s feelings. Or they tell the person something they were not supposed to tell. The speaker might say: “I really put my foot in my mouth this time.” If this should happen, the speaker might feel “down in the mouth”. In other words, he might feel sad for saying the wrong thing.

Another situation is when someone falsely claims another person said something. The other person might protest, “I did not say that. Do not put words in my mouth.”

Some people have lots of money because they were born into a very rich family. There is an expression for this, too. You might say such a person “was born with a silver spoon in his mouth”. This rich person is the opposite of a person who “lives from hand to mouth”. This person is very poor and only has enough money for the most important things in life, like food.

Parents might sometimes withhold (拒给) sweet food from a child as a form of punishment for saying bad things. For example, if a child says things she should not say to her parents, she might be described as “a mouthy child”. The parents might even tell the child to “stop mouthing off”.

But enough of all this talk. I have been “running my mouth long enough”.

(2024·贵阳市高三适应性监测二)When we think of flavor (味道), it is our noses and taste buds (味蕾) that we think of first. Isnt it natural that taste and smell are the main senses when we enjoy food and drink? Well, perhaps not. “Now we are beginning to understand that flavor depends on parts of the brain that involve not only taste, smell and

touch, but vision. These signals, plus our emotions and past experiences, result in perception (感受) of flavors, and decide whether we like or dislike foods.” “Years ago, flavor was a table with two legs — taste and odor,” Terry E. Acree, PhD, told National Geographic.

A good example of “the first bite is taken with the eye” is that if we were shown two plates of strawberries, one red and the other pinkish, the majority of us would be attracted to red because “it signals ripeness, sweetness and calories”, explained The Guardian.

The findings of a German study seem to back this up. Its subjects said wine tasted 50 percent sweeter if drunk under red light, rather than under blue or white.

In a study released in midDecember, scientists found that the color of your coffee mug can change the way your coffee tastes, reported The Washington Post. And it is not just the color of the food that matters. Specifically, the white mug was associated with a more “intense” (or bitter) tasting cup of coffee, and the clear glass mug was not. The blue mug, meanwhile, was “kind of an intermediate (中等的)”, Charles Spence, head of the research laboratory at Oxford University, told the newspaper.

The opposite was true for perceived sweetness — those who took part tasted less sweetness when drinking from the white mug than they did when drinking from both the blue and clear glass mugs.

It?s also possible that certain colors are associated with certain experiences. In the case of coffee, the researchers believe the color brown might be something people associate with bitterness. “The white mug may have affected the perceived brownness of the coffee and this, in turn, may have affected the perceived intensity (and sweetness) of the coffee,” the researchers wrote.

  9.The passage mainly discusses ________.

  A.tasting with eyesB.ideas about flavor

  C.wine and coffee

  D.colors and likes

  A.Touch.

  B.Smell.

  C.Vision.

  D.Color.

11.What color of light can make wine taste 50% sweeter?

  A.Blue.

  B.White.

  C.Brown.

  D.Red.

(2024·绵阳市第三次诊断)Failure is inevitable if we are to succeed in life. Unfortunately, many people do not know how to overcome failure, and they are stopped by it when they encounter one.

  Rise up and dont regret

When we fail, we might be tempted to think that we have wasted our time and thus regret it. But that should not be the case. The fact that you have done something is much better than doing nothing. Rise up and move on.__1__

Understand that failure is there to bring you wisdom

Failure is there not without a reason. __2__ Each failure you encounter increases your wisdom and brings you one step closer to success. If you have this, you will see failure differently. You will see each failure as an opportunity to learn.
